South Wales Police covers an area of around 812 square miles, which although only representing 10% of the geographical area of Wales, is the home to 1,225,900 people, around 42% of the country's whole population.
The two Welsh cities of Cardiff and Swansea both are situated the force area and continue to expand and provide their own policing challenges. The capital city Cardiff is the youngest European city and is recognised as one of the fastest growing, being both vibrant and cosmopolitan. Swansea is a maritime city with a rich and varied history with many prime attractions including shopping centres, museums, art galleries, leisure attractions as well as miles of sea front beaches and the Gower peninsula.
The north of the force area is home to the famous South Wales valleys - historically the base of heavy industry in South Wales. The past two decades have seen major. This result has seen social change and an increasingly transient working population.
Coastal regions within the force are also undergoing rapid change with the development of marinas and waterfront residential sites in the dockside areas of many towns. The continuing development in the area ensures that South Wales Police will meet these challenges with flexibility to ensure that the force will effectively serve the communities it polices.
